Stage Truss Buying Guide: How to Choose Size, Material and Connectors

When you plan a stage, booth, or touring rig, the truss carries lighting, audio, LED screens, banners, and sometimes the roof. Choosing well means matching section size, aluminum grade, connector type, and finish to your actual span and load. We are Guangzhou Benjie Stage Equipment Co., Ltd., founded in 2015 in Guangzhou, China, a manufacturer of aluminum stage equipment. Our range includes aluminum truss, portable stage, crowd control barriers, aluminum bleachers, scaffolding towers, and truss accessories.

Start with the Job, Not the Catalog

Span and Load Come First

Measure the clear span—the distance between support points—and list everything that will hang from the truss. A short decorative span behaves differently from a long roof span carrying moving lights, speakers, and video panels. Load position matters: a point load in the middle is not the same as a uniformly distributed load. Indoor versus outdoor use, wind, and whether the truss is assembled repeatedly also affect the choice.

Do not choose a truss only by outside width. Look at section depth, chord size, wall thickness, and diagonal bracing. As span and load increase, you generally need a deeper, stronger section. Our aluminum truss range covers square box truss, bolt truss, flat truss, triangle truss, and pre-rigging truss. Review the BJF34 and BJF44 box truss pages, then speak with us about your load plan.

Choosing Section Size for Span and Load

Section size is the heart of truss selection. Larger spans and heavier loads require larger, deeper sections. But total weight is not the only issue. Consider how the load is attached, where it sits along the span, and whether the truss is supported at both ends, in the middle, or in a grid. A truss for a simple banner may be unsuitable for moving lights and a heavy LED wall.

Match the Truss Type to the Use

Square box truss is common for rigging and touring because it offers multiple mounting faces. Flat truss can suit lighter decorative or display applications where depth is limited. Triangle truss can work for certain architectural or display shapes. If you are unsure, describe the complete build: stage size, roof shape, number of lights, speaker weights, screen size, and how the truss will be lifted. Then we can discuss which section from our range is appropriate. Never accept a simple "it will be fine" answer without load information for your exact configuration.

Aluminum Grade: Why 6082-T6 Matters

We manufacture with En-Aw 6082-T6 and 6061-T6 aluminum. 6082-T6 is one of the aluminum grades we use for truss and related stage equipment. 6061-T6 is also part of our material options. The grade matters because it is part of the structural specification.

Ask for the Grade, Not Just "Aluminum"

Two trusses can look similar but use different alloys, wall thicknesses, or welding quality. If a supplier cannot tell you the aluminum grade, that is a warning sign. Ask for the material grade in writing. Also ask whether the same grade is used throughout the chords, diagonals, and connectors. The connector material matters as much as the tube because the connection point takes concentrated loads. Our truss accessories include couplers, spigots, corners, and base plates. You can learn more about our background on the about page.

Connector Systems: Conical Pin, Spigot, and Bolt Plate

Connectors determine how fast the truss assembles, how tight the joints stay, and how well the system fits your workflow.

Conical Pin

Conical pin connectors use tapered pins to align and lock truss sections. They are known for fast assembly and are common where speed matters. When comparing conical pin truss, ask about pin retention, hole alignment, and compatibility across the sections you plan to buy.

Spigot

Spigot connectors use a spigot end that inserts into the matching truss end, then secures with pins or clips. This can make alignment straightforward during repetitive touring or event builds. Our spigot accessories work with our aluminum truss sections. If you are building a stage or truss grid, review our portable stage options to see how truss and stage decks combine.

Bolt Plate

Bolt plate connectors use plates and bolts to join sections. They are often chosen for permanent installations or projects where a very secure, fixed connection is preferred. Bolt plate systems can take longer to assemble than pin systems, but they can suit architectural and permanent stage applications. Ask about bolt grade, plate thickness, and whether the plates are pre-drilled for your specific truss.

Finish and Color Choices

Finish color is both practical and visual. A natural aluminum finish can suit industrial or modern designs, while a painted or coated finish can help the truss blend into a venue, match a brand color, or reduce glare. Ask what finish options are available for the product you are buying, how the finish is applied, and how it should be maintained. The same questions apply to our crowd control barrier and aluminum bleachers ranges.

Questions to Ask a Manufacturer

Before you order, ask these questions directly.

Can You Make Custom Lengths?

Standard lengths may not fit every stage or venue. Ask whether custom lengths are possible, what tooling or minimum order may apply, and how custom lengths affect lead time and shipping. If custom lengths are not available, ask how standard sections can be combined with corners and accessories.

Can You Provide Load Information?

Ask for load information for the exact truss section, span, support arrangement, and load position. A generic chart is not enough. You need to know how the truss performs with your planned lights, speakers, screens, and other equipment.

What Is the Lead Time?

Lead time depends on product type, finish, custom work, and order volume. Ask for a production schedule before you pay a deposit. Also ask what accessories are included—couplers, spigots, corners, base plates—and whether they are in stock. You can contact us at lan@bjtruss.cn or +86-20-39280432 to discuss your project.

Final Thoughts

Buying stage truss is a technical decision, not just a price comparison. Start with span and load, choose the right section size, confirm the aluminum grade, match the connector system to your assembly needs, and select a finish that suits the venue. Then ask the manufacturer the hard questions about custom lengths, load information, and lead time. If you are planning a complete system, explore our aluminum truss, scaffolding tower, and projects pages. We will help you specify a truss system that fits the job.
